Finnish pianist Juho Pohjonen offers a wide-ranging program, beginning with Rameau’s G-Major Suite. A discursive collection, it contains dances, pieces to satisfy the Baroque audience’s love of the exotic, virtuosic imitations of a chicken, and lyrical evocations of poetry. Scriabin’s eighth sonata, described by the composer as “bridges between the visible and the invisible,” is notable for its intensely introverted character. Finnish composer and conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen’s Dichotomie builds a different bridge: between the mechanical and organic. The composer says the first movement represents, “a machine that could feel some sort of joie de vivre,” and the second, “a … slender willow that moves gracefully in the wind but returns always to its original shape …”
