Daryl Sherman: Satchmo The Singer - Jazz Journal

Daryl Sherman
Voted Best Jazz Vocalist Hot House Magazine

“Taste, style, charm, singing, playing – as good as it gets!” – Michael Feinstein

Daryl Sherman has been an integral part of the NYC jazz/cabaret scene since the mid-70s – and is one of the rare singing pianists equally talented in both roles. From early stints at Sinatra jazz hang-outs Jilly’s, Jimmy Weston’s, and Eddie Condon’s, Daryl also played most of the major NY hotels and became internationally acclaimed for a stellar 14-year run at the Waldorf-Astoria, where she played Cole Porter’s Steinway. After the Waldorf closed for renovations, Daryl was asked to play that famed Steinway while on loan to the New York Historical Society. Her versatility has kept her busy performing at Rose Hall with Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, Dizzy’s Jazz Club, the 92nd St Y Lyrics & Lyricists series, and 59E59 Theaters. In the 80s when Artie Shaw formed a new tour band, Daryl was his singer of choice. In addition, Daryl has appeared as a pianist-singer with Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks and has been a frequent guest on Marian McPartland’s NPR Piano Jazz. Her many CDs in regular rotation on Cable TV Music Choice, WNYC, Spotify, and Pandora include jazz greats like Ken Peplowski, Houston Person, Bucky and John Pizzarelli. Her Johnny Mercer Centennial CD, which was used in a documentary produced by Clint Eastwood won the 2010 MAC Award “Best Major Recording.” Annual UK tours include Ronnie Scott’s, Pizza Express Jazz Club in London, plus jazz venues in Wales, Scotland, and Holland. Daryl’s recording My Blue Heaven is released by Muzak, a company based in Tokyo where she has performed for four straight years. No stranger to the Crescent City, Daryl has performed and lectured at Satchmo Summerfest. Her newest release Lost In A Crowded Place, highlights songs by Louis Armstrong, Ella and Duke Ellington, as well as two Sherman originals. In NYC, Daryl also appears at Birdland, Mezzrow Jazz, Midday Jazz at St Peter’s in Midtown, and the Highlights In Jazz concert series. Since the Pandemic, Daryl virtually coaches and does Master classes via Zoom or FaceTime.
