Pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet takes the stage in Aram Khachaturian’s rarely heard Piano Concerto, one of the Armenian composer’s greatest triumphs. Stéphane Denève leads orchestral music inspired by the sounds of nature, from Respighi’s extravagant Pines of Rome to Rautavaara’s Cantus Arcticus, both featuring recordings of birdsong. Lera Auerbach’s Icarus captures, in her words, the title character’s “wish to reach the unreachable.”
Program
