Friday May 8, 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

Italy and America in Dialogue at Italian Cultural Institute of New York

This program explores the exchange between Europe (with a focus on Italy) and America through three composers whose works embody a cultural dialogue across the Atlantic. Ildebrando Pizzetti was firmly rooted in Italian tradition, lyricism, and counterpoint; Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco was forced to immigrate to the US in 1939 because of the infamous fascist racial law, bringing with him the voice that later flourished in Hollywood; and Leonard Bernstein was an American composer shaped by European and Italian models who reimagined them with uniquely American energy. Together, these artists show how identities in music are constantly enriched through migration, encounter, and exchange between Old and New worlds.
