Mannes Sounds: Preludes Then and Now

The novelist Thomas Mann, influenced by his reading of Schopenhauer, privileged music above all the arts. Music plays an important role in several of his works, especially the novels Buddenbrooks, The Magic Mountain and Doctor Faustus, as well as some of the shorter stories and novellas.

We will look at several works of music – vocal, operatic, piano and orchestral – with performances and commentary on the role these works play in his writings.

Presented by the College of Performing Arts at The New School.
