“Stunning eclecticism and complexity, but thoroughly accessible, elastic with swing.”
Composer-bandleader Darcy James Argue’s 18-piece ensemble Secret Society is one of the most enthralling and acclaimed large ensembles in jazz, reimagining what a modern big band can be. The ensemble joins Aaron Diehl for the world premiere of A Banquet for the Birds, Argue’s new suite for piano and jazz orchestra written for Diehl, and co-commissioned by 92NY and the NDR Bigband. Hear this thrilling new work — inspired by Emily Wilson’s acclaimed new translation ofThe Iliad— plus Argue’s large ensemble arrangements of Diehl’s own compositions. And experience the vibrant, nuanced, wildly inventive music that is Argue’s signature — whatJazzwisecalled “a heady elixir of the past, the present and an imagined future.”
Online streaming also available for 72 hours following the performance.
