SUMMARY:Beethoven and Strauss at Bloomingdale School of Music
DESCRIPTION:Program Notes \nViolinist Rolf Schulte and pianist Judith Olson present a concert of two major works of the chamber music repertoire. Beethoven’s dramatic and turbulent Violin Sonata in C minor\, written when the composer was forced to accept the inevitability of his deafness. Richard Strauss wrote his last major chamber work\, the Violin Sonata\, at the age of 23. The music is brimming with youthful ardor and passion and was to be his last major chamber piece before he devoted his career to orchestral tone poems and operas. \nPhoto Consent \nBy attending this event\, you consent to the taking of photographs\, audio recordings\, video recordings\, and/or other digital images or recordings during this event by staff\, volunteers\, or outside media. SUMMARY:Bowling with Mozart at Bloomingdale School of Music
DESCRIPTION:Program Notes \nKegelstatt is German for a nine-pin-bowling alley. The sublime trio composed for viola\, clarinet and piano bears such title because it is believed that Mozart conceived it while playing rounds of bowling. The hasty handwriting of the autograph seems to prove this theory. Regardless\, it is an unusual piece as it replaces the customary bass (cello) for an alto instrument (the viola\, Mozart’s acknowledged favorite) and pairs it with the clarinet\, which became late in his life the perfect medium to render his antic disposition for juxtapositions of mood and sonic possibilities. The program is complemented by two late works that reflect his full mastery for a wide tonal and emotional range. \nProgram \nRondo in A minor\, K. 511 – 10 \nSonata in B-flat\, K. 570\, I. Allegro II. Adagio III. Allegretto \nTrio for Piano\, Clarinet and Viola “Kegelstatt”\, K. 498\, I. Andante\, II. Menuetto\, III. Rondeaux (Allegretto) \nPhoto Consent \nBy attending this event\, you consent to the taking of photographs\, audio recordings\, video recordings\, and/or other digital images or recordings during this event by staff\, volunteers\, or outside media. SUMMARY:The Piano Music of Bartok at Bloomingdale School of Music
DESCRIPTION:Judith Olson and her students perform solos and duets by 20th century Hungarian composer Bela Bartok\, whose 400-plus works for piano include two landmark collections:\n“For Children\,” based on Hungarian and Slovakian tunes\, and “Mikrokosmos” (Little World)\,\nminiatures in a world of compositional styles and techniques. The program includes selections from these sets\, and from the popular Romanian Dances and Sonatina. \nThe centerpiece of the concert is “Musiques nocturnes\,” from Out of Doors\, an impressionistic\, magical evocation of a Hungarian landscape at night–the chirping and\ntwittering of insects\, the rustle of twigs\, and the sudden screech of a frightened bird. \nJust for fun\, we will include Bruce Adolph’s arrangement of “A Hard Day’s Night” (Beatles) in the style of Bartok

SUMMARY:Can We Go Home Again? Brahms to Schönberg\, at Bloomingdale School of Music
DESCRIPTION:Program Notes \nLess than twenty years separates Brahms’s last piano composition and Schönberg’s first venture into free atonality. Brahms was an heir of the tonal language\, and dramatic possibilities\, of Beethoven. Schönberg proposed to remove that harmonic motivation. \nIf you remove the musical concept of “home\,” what is left? These two works\, side by side\, illustrate an astonishingly rigorous programme of motivic developments\, in which a sensitivity to imitation\, distortion\, return\, and prolongation illuminates a surprisingly similar manner in which Brahms and Schönberg organize the emotional paths of these little piano pieces. \nSchönberg’s opus 11 looks ahead\, stylistically\, to the compositional developments that it succeeded in effecting\, but emotionally and dramatically\, they feel quite retrospective\, as if their gaze is backward at Brahms\, the aesthetic precursor\, as his pieces inwardly contemplate the end of their own tonal language.

SUMMARY:A Living Legacy: Violin-Piano Music from our American Contemporaries at Bloomingdale School of Music
DESCRIPTION:Claudia Schaer and Marc Péloquin present a recital of outstanding contemporary American Violin-Piano duos. A wealth of genres and styles are at our fingertips …\nPhilip Wharton’s Tombeau de Ravel harkens back not just to the impressionist Ravel but also to baroque composer François Couperin\, reminding us of the past with vivid fresh imagination. Drew Hemenger’s Sharks! is a jazzy play on that fish’s most famous theme song. Max Lifchitz’ Raoul’s Tango-Waltz\, from Four Tango Sketches which were premiered in their chamber orchestra version with Claudia Schaer and the North-South Chamber Orchestra in 2022\, is a tongue-in-cheek fusion of tango and waltz styles. Christopher James’ Labyrinths was written for Claudia Schaer and Marc Péloquin and recorded in spring 2024; it is a very expressive 12-tone work with many-faceted thoughts and characters. Jessie Montgomery’s Peace was composed in 2020 and is a deeply pensive meditation on the sadness that is part of the fabric of life. Michael Torke’s Spoon Bread gives a nod to Kentucky\, and is brightly influenced by fiddling\, jazz and baroque music altogether. Ellene Taaffe Zwilich’s Partita rounds out the program with a light-hearted and fun take on many of the above genres.
