SUMMARY:Mannes Sounds Piano Cantabile: An Evening of Music by John Corigliano at The New School
DESCRIPTION:Curated by Ursula Oppens \nPresented by the College of Performing Arts at The New School. \nFree with RSVP \nAbout: \nJohn Corigliano continues to add to one of the richest\, most unusual\, and most widely celebrated bodies of work any composer has created over the last forty years. Corigliano’s scores\, now numbering over one hundred\, have won the Pulitzer Prize\, the Grawemeyer Award\, five Grammy Awards\, an Academy Award\, and have been performed and recorded by many of the most prominent orchestras\, soloists\, and chamber musicians in the world. Attentive listening to this music reveals an unconfined imagination\, one which has taken traditional notions like “symphony” or “concerto” and redefined them in a uniquely transparent idiom forged as much from the post-war European avant-garde as from his American forebears.

SUMMARY:Mannes Sounds Masterclass: John O'Conor at The New School
DESCRIPTION:About: \n“A pianist of unbounding sensitivity” (Gramophone) ; “He represents a vanishing tradition that favors inner expression and atmosphere over showmanship and bravura” (Chicago Tribune) ; “Impeccable technique and musicality … it would be hard to imagine better performances” (Sunday Times – London) ; “This artist has the kind of flawless touch that makes an audience gasp” (Washington Post); “Exquisite playing” (New York Times). The Irish pianist John O’Conor has been gathering wonderful reviews for his masterly playing for over forty years. Having studied in his native Dublin\, in Vienna with Dieter Weber and been tutored by the legendary Wilhelm Kempff his unanimous 1st Prize at the International Beethoven Piano Competition in Vienna in 1973 opened the door to a career that has brought him all around the world. \nHe has performed with many of the world’s leading orchestras including the London Symphony\, Royal Philharmonic\, Czech Philharmonic\, Vienna Symphony\, l’Orchestre National de France\, the NHK Orchestra in Japan and the Atlanta\, Cleveland\, San Francisco\, Dallas\, Montreal and Detroit Symphonies in North America. He has given concerts in many of the world’s most famous halls including Carnegie Hall and the Lincoln Center in New York\, the Kennedy Center in Washington\, the Wigmore Hall and South Bank Centre in London\, the Musikverein in Vienna\, the Dvorak Hall in Prague\, the Seoul Arts Centre\, and the Bunka Kaikan in Tokyo. He enjoys collaborating in Lieder recitals and performing chamber music with many instrumentalists and ensembles such as the Cleveland\, Tokyo\, Vanbrugh\, Vermeer\, Takacs\, Vogler and Ying Quartets. \nJohn O’Conor first gained widespread attention in the USA in 1986 with the release of his first volume of Beethoven Sonatas on the Telarc label. He went on to record the complete Sonatas and these were issued as a box set in 1994. CD Review described Mr. O’Conor’s performances as “recordings of the highest calibre and Beethoven playing at its best” and went on to say “by now he should be recognized as the world’s premier Beethoven interpreter”. Mr. O’Conor has made more than 20 recordings for Telarc\, including the complete Beethoven Bagatelles (cited by the New York Times as the best recordings of these works) and Mozart Concertos with Sir Charles Mackerras and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. He has also recorded the complete Nocturnes\, Sonatas and Concertos of the Irish Composer John Field. \nIn 2007 and 2008 he recorded the complete Piano Concertos of Beethoven with the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Andreas Delfs and these have been greeted with great acclaim. In the past two years he has released three new CDs on the Steinway label\, one of Beethoven’s Diabelli Variations and two of Haydn Sonatas. He has also been featured on tonebase.com with videos on teaching and discussing Beethoven and Haydn Sonatas. Last summer he recorded a CD of the complete Beethoven Cello Sonatas with the Irish cellist Ailbhe McDonagh. \nProf. O’Conor is regarded as one of the most important piano teachers in the world today. He is Distinguished Artist in Residence\, Professor of Music and Chair of the Piano Division at Shenandoah Conservatory in Virginia\, Professor of Piano at the Glenn Gould School of the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto\, Distinguished Visiting Artist at the TU Dublin Conservatoire of Music and Visiting Professor at Showa University in Japan. His students have won many international prizes and he is in great demand for masterclasses and as a juror at the most prestigious International Piano Competitions worldwide. \nFor his services to music he has been awarded Honorary Doctorates by the National University of Ireland\, by Trinity College Dublin\, by the Dublin Institute of Technology and by Shenandoah University\, the title “Officier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres” by the French Government\, the “Ehrenkreuz für Wissenschaft und Kunst” by the Austrian Government\, the Order of the Rising Sun by the Emperor of Japan\, and has received many other awards. In 2015 he was made an Honorary Life Member of the Royal Dublin Society. In October 2016 he was made an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in Ireland and in November 2017 he was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award of the National Concert Hall in Dublin by the President of Ireland\, Michael D. Higgins. \nJohn O’Conor is a Steinway Artist. \nPresented by the College of Performing Arts at The New School. \nFree with RSVP

SUMMARY:Mannes Sounds Lecture: Piano Duo Anna and Dmitri Shelest present “Donna Voce: Music of Women Composers from the 19th through 21st Centuries"
DESCRIPTION:The Shelest Piano Duo presents a captivating exploration of music for piano four hands and two pianos\, featuring works by women composers spanning the past three centuries. \nAbout \nPraised for their “stirring performances of rare repertory” (Fanfare Magazine)\, the Shelest Piano Duo is a husband-and-wife team of ANNA AND DMITRI SHELEST who trace their roots to the music school in Ukraine. At their official Carnegie Hall debut in February 2018\, their CD release of Ukrainian Rhapsodybrought the renewed attention to the music of their homeland. The Duo\, who met as classmates in middle school\, began performing together after their marriage in the U.S. Their inventive programs have brought them to a broad array of venues from concert stages to state functions\, and\, in words of Secretary-General of the United Nations Ban Ki-moon\, “realized diplomacy through music.” \nDmitri Shelest started studying piano at the age of six in Ukraine and soon enrolled into the Kharkiv Special Music School\, succeeding at his first contest when he was 11 years old. It was also piano that brought him across to the U.S. after he was offered a full scholarship to Northern Kentucky University as a bachelor’s degree candidate in piano performance. \nWhile at NKU\, Mr. Shelest won top prizes in various international piano competitions and participated in music festivals. After graduating in 2005\, he pursued a post- baccalaureate degree in entrepreneurship. Since relocating with his family to New York\, he has been active as a chamber musician in addition to managing a record label and a piano retail showroom. \nHailed by The New York Times as a pianist of “a fiery sensibility and warm touch\,” Anna Shelest is an international award-winning musician who has thrilled audiences throughout the world. Anna\, a champion of esoteric repertoire\, is currently collaborating with the legendary conductor Neeme Järvi on a project of recording the complete works for piano and orchestra by Anton Rubinstein. \nAnna made her orchestral debut at the age of 12 years old with the Kharkiv Symphony Orchestra\, playing Rachmaninoff’s “Piano Concerto No. 1.” Since then\, she has been a soloist with world-class orchestras such as Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra\, Montreal Symphony Orchestra and Estonian National Symphony Orchestra among others. \nAs a soloist\, she has appeared at Alice Tully Hall and Stern Auditorium at Carnegie Hall in New York City\, The Kennedy Center in Washington\, DC\, Wiener Konzerthaus in Vienna and Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City. \nBorn in Ukraine\, Mrs. Shelest received her early music education at Kharkiv Special Music School. After receiving her Bachelor of Music degree at Northern Kentucky University\, she graduated from The Juilliard School with a master’s degree. \nToday\, Anna and Dmitri Shelest make their home in New York City with their two sons\, Ivan and Alexey.

SUMMARY:Vladimir Feltsman Piano Master Class at the Mannes School of Music
DESCRIPTION:Featuring internationally acclaimed pianist Vladimir Feltsman\, this masterclass provides music lovers with a rare opportunity to witness the interaction between gifted Mannes students and a great artist as they examine and explore the craft of performance at the highest level. \nVladimir Feltsman was born in Moscow in 1952. He received his training at Moscow Special Music School and at Moscow Conservatory where he studied piano under the guidance of Jacob Flier. He also studied conducting in St. Petersburg (then Leningrad) Conservatory with Ilya Musin. In 1971 he received a Grand Prix at the Margaret Long Piano Competition in Paris\, and following that\, toured extensively through the former Soviet Union\, Europe and Japan. In 1979\, because of his growing discontent with the rigid ideological control and restrictions on artistic freedom\, he applied for an exit visa from Soviet Union. In response\, he was effectively banned from performing in public until he was finally granted the permission to emigrate from USSR in 1987. His debut recital at Carnegie Hall in 1987 immediately established him as a major pianist on the American and international scene. Since then\, he performed with all major American orchestras and appeared on the most prestigious recital series and music festivals in the US and abroad. Pianist\, conductor and teacher\, Mr. Feltsman is recognized as one of the most probing and constantly interesting musicians of his generation. His extensive repertoire encompasses the music from Baroque to the XXI century composers and his discography includes more than 70 recordings. He is a founder and artistic Director of PianoSummer at New Paltz\, and a faculty member at SUNY New Paltz and Mannes College The New School for Music.
