SUMMARY:The Hot Sardines at Birdland (Early and Late Shows)
DESCRIPTION:Description\nOver the last several years\, the Hot Sardines have emerged from the Brooklyn neo-speakeasies where they got their start to make a global name for themselves playing hot jazz as it was in the era when live music was king\, bridging generations and captivating 21st-century audiences. The group\, led by frontwoman Elizabeth Bougerol and piano player Evan Palazzo\, has been described as “potent and assured” (The New York Times) and “simply phenomenal” (The Times of London)\, notching more than a year on the Billboard Jazz chart and 60 million streams on Spotify (over 90 countries). They’ve guested on Later… With Jools Holland\, NPR’s Weekend Edition\, CBS Saturday Morning\, NPR’s Soundcheck\, Live at WFUV\, and appeared at major jazz festivals including Newport\, Montreal\, Toronto\, London\, and Blue Note in Japan in addition to sold-out shows at more than 400 venues worldwide. They’ve performed their Boston Pops-debuted symphony show with orchestras throughout North America. Their three major albums have landed on best-of lists in the jazz press (Downbeat\, JazzTimes) but also crossed over to the mainstream\, with Rolling Stone noting that “100-year-old jazz standards get reborn” in the hands of the Hot Sardines. \nThis is a recurring event. All dates:\nTuesday\, November 04 2025\, 07:00 PM\nTuesday\, November 04 2025\, 09:30 PM\nWednesday\, November 05 2025\, 07:00 PM\nWednesday\, November 05 2025\, 09:30 PM\nThursday\, November 06 2025\, 07:00 PM\nThursday\, November 06 2025\, 09:30 PM\nFriday\, November 07 2025\, 08:30 PM\nFriday\, November 07 2025\, 10:30 PM\nSaturday\, November 08 2025\, 08:30 PM\nSaturday\, November 08 2025\, 10:30 PM

SUMMARY:Pianist Ian Hobson ~ Robert Schumann Cycle at Tenri Cultural Institute
DESCRIPTION:The immensely versatile and internationally lauded pianist and conductor Ian Hobson\, whose playing has been described by Gramophone as “intensely alive to expressive nuance\, textural clarity and elastic shaping\,” continues his Robert Schumann Cycle recital series on Friday evening\, November 7\, 2025\, at 7:00 p.m.\, at New York’s Tenri Cultural Institute. The Schumann Cycle is devoted to the composer’s entire solo piano and chamber works with piano. \n  \nEntitled Florestan And Eusebius\, the full program follows: \n  \nRobert Schumann \n  \nPiano Sonata No. 1 in F-sharp minor\, Op. 11 \n~ Intermission ~ \nDavidsbündlertänze\, Op. 6 \n  \nReviewing Mr. Hobson’s concert in spring 2024 with Andrés Cárdenes (violin)\, Jun Iwasaki (violin)\, Csaba Erdélyi (viola)\, and Ko Iwasaki (cello)\, critic Walter Aparicio of New York Concert Review called the group of musicians “expert chamber music collaborators.” He had this to say about the ensemble’s performance of Schumann’s Piano Quartet in E-flat major\, Op. 47: “Each member of the ensemble demonstrated a profound affection for this melody\, infusing it with deep sentiment every time it recurred…The ensemble exhibited excellent communication and demonstrated a keen understanding of Schumann’s adept transitions from Baroque elements to Romanticism within the piece—a skill finely executed.” (May 10\, 2024) \n  \nPianist and conductor Ian Hobson—called “powerful and persuasive” by The New York Times— is recognized internationally for his command of an extraordinarily comprehensive repertoire\, his consummate performances of the Romantic masters\, his deft and idiomatic readings of neglected piano music old and new\, and his assured conducting from both the piano and the podium. As of September 2023\, Maestro Hobson has been appointed Guest Conductor of the esteemed Sinfonia Varsovia.
