He won first prize in the Dino Ciani Competition sponsored by La Scala in Milan\, a gold medal at the Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels\, and top honors at the Warsaw Chopin\, Van Cliburn\, Vianna da Motta and Montreal Competitions\, as well as the Young Concert Artists auditions in New York City. His large and varied repertoire includes more than 60 concertos as well as solo works ranging from Bach to Boulez. \nIn addition to presenting lecture/recitals worldwide\, Mr. Swann has performed with the symphonies of Cincinnati\, Pittsburgh\, Seattle\, Indiana\, Dallas\, Saint Louis\, Houston\, Baltimore\, San Antonio\, New Jersey\, Louisville\, New Orleans\, Honolulu and Minneapolis; and in Europe with the orchestras of Rotterdam\, The Hague\, Belgian National and Radio\, Warsaw Philharmonic\, La Scala\, Santa Cecilia\, RAI Turin and Rome\, Czech Philharmonic\, Radio France de Montpellier and the London Philharmonia\, among many others. And see how a small setting can make for a huge musical experience. \n\nProgram\nShostakovich: Five Pieces\nBeethoven: String Trio in C minor\, Op. 9\, No. 3\nDvořák: String Quintet No. 2 \nArtists\nKuan Cheng Lu (Violin): Violinist Kuan Cheng Lu joined the New York Philharmonic at the start of the 2004–05 season — the first Taiwanese classical musician to earn a seat in the Philharmonic in its 170-year history. Lu has received numerous awards and scholarships that include the top prize in the Taiwan National Violin Competition\, first prize in the ASTA string competition\, the Raphael Bronstein Award\, and the Taiwan Chi-Mei Corporation’s Outstanding Young Artist award. He received his bachelor’s in music degree from Oberlin College\, his master’s in music from the Manhattan School of Music\, and his doctor of musical arts from the Graduate Center\, City University of New York (CUNY). He is an alumnus of the Music Academy of the West\, now a partner in the New York Philharmonic Global Academy\, and has studied with former New York Philharmonic Concertmaster Glenn Dicterow\, Lisa Kim\, Associate Principal\, Second Violin Group\, and Yoko Takebe. Other teachers have included Roland and Almita Vamos\, Daniel Phillips\, Julia Bushkova\, as well as his father\, Chung Chih Lu. Learn more about Kuan Cheng Lu \nAudrey Wright (Violin): Audrey Wright is a multifaceted artist across solo\, chamber music\, and orchestral realms. She joined the New York Philharmonic in 2022\, having served as associate concertmaster of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. She also serves as concertmaster of the Baltimore Chamber Orchestra. Wright has performed across the globe in venues such as Carnegie Hall\, Boston Symphony Hall\, London’s Royal Albert Hall\, Saint Petersburg Philharmonia\, and the Vatican\, and has been a soloist with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra\, Baltimore Chamber Orchestra\, New World Symphony\, and Cape Symphony Orchestra. With a passion for innovative programming and juxtaposing a wide range of musical styles\, her repertoire spans the early 17th century to the modern day\, and her performing experience includes the full spectrum of these musical styles\, from period performance practice to the premiering of new and personally commissioned works. Her debut album\,  Things In Pairs\,  with pianist Yundu Wang\, was released on Navona Records in 2022. Learn more about Audrey Wright \nI-Jung Huang (Violin): Taiwanese violinist I-Jung Huang joined the New York Philharmonic in 2022. Before that\, she was appointed to the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra’s first violin section in 2020. Huang is a top prizewinner of the 2017 Ima Hogg Concerto Competition and the 2016 Hudson Valley String Competition; a Laureate of the 2015 Michael Hill International Violin Competition; a top prizewinner of the Taipei Symphony Orchestra “The Young Talent” competition and the Academy of Taiwan Strings Competition in Taiwan; and was the youngest musician selected at the Young Artist Taiwan Bank in 2011. She has appeared as soloist with the Houston Symphony Orchestra\, Hudson Valley Philharmonic\, Taiwan Philharmonic\, and Taipei Symphony Orchestra. Learn more about I-Jung Huang \nNa Sun (Violin): Violinist Na Sun joined the New York Philharmonic in 2006. A  native of China\, she began playing the violin at age seven\, and at nine was accepted into the Central Conservatory  of Music in Beijing. After attending the conservatory’s  elementary\, middle\, and high schools\, she received her bachelor  of arts degree there with the highest honor\, studying with Yaoji  Lin. She was concertmaster of the China Youth Symphony  Orchestra\, and was  soloist in Brahms’s Violin Concerto with the Xiamen  Symphony Orchestra.  Sun\, who has performed in numerous recital and chamber  music concerts since arriving in the United States in 2003\, received her  artist diploma from Boston University in 2005\, studying with  Roman Totenberg. She was the grand-prize winner of the Bach  Competition\, attended Kneisel Hall Chamber Music Festival\, and served as concertmaster of the Tanglewood  Music Center Orchestra\, led by James Levine.  A frequent soloist with major orchestras in China\, Sun  recently performed with the China National Theater Orchestra  and with the Qingdao\, Shenzhen\, and Guangzhou symphony  orchestras\, conducted by Yu Long and Tan Dun. Learn more about Na Sun \nCong Wu (Viola): Cong Wu joined the New York Philharmonic as Assistant Principal Viola in September 2018. He is the winner of the Third Prize and the Chamber Music Prize in the Fourteenth Primrose International Viola Competition\, and the Special Prize in the Twelfth Tertis International Viola Competition. His performances throughout North America and Asia include solo appearances with the Santa Barbara Chamber Orchestra\, New York Classical Players\, and the Long Island Concert Orchestra. Learn more about Cong Wu \nTabitha Rhee (Viola): Tabitha Rhee joined the viola section of the New York Philharmonic in September 2023. She has performed with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra and Jupiter Symphony Chamber Players. She is the winner of the Juilliard Concerto Competition and has appeared as soloist and served as principal viola with the Juilliard Orchestra. She has also appeared as soloist with the Wisconsin Philharmonic\, Madison Symphony Orchestra\, and Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra. Learn more about Tabitha Rhee \nAlexei Yupanqui Gonzales (Cello): Alexei Yupanqui Gonzales was appointed to the cello section of the New York Philharmonic in November 2012. He has served as the principal cellist of the Rhode Island Philharmonic and the Boston Lyric Opera. He has also been a member of the Boston Ballet Orchestra and has performed with the Boston Symphony\, Boston Pops\, A Far Cry Chamber Orchestra\, Emmanuel Music under the late Craig Smith\, and the Bach Ensemble with harpsichordist John Gibbons. Learn more about Alexei Yupanqui Gonzales \nJohn F. Lee (Cello): Cellist John F. Lee joined the New York Philharmonic in June 2024. A native of Basking Ridge\, New Jersey\, Lee completed a bachelor’s degree in history of science and statistics at Harvard University and a master of music degree from New England Conservatory with Laurence Lesser\, part of the five-year dual-degree program. He earned a post-baccalaureate diploma from the Curtis Institute of Music under the tutelage of Peter Wiley\, Gary Hoffman\, and NY Phil Principal Cello Carter Brey. Prior to joining the NY Phil\, he was a member of the San Diego Symphony from 2022. Learn more about John F. Lee \nTimothy Cobb (Bass): Bassist  Timothy Cobb  joined the New York Philharmonic as Principal Bass in May 2014\, after serving as principal bass of The Metropolitan Opera Orchestra\, and  principal bass of the Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra since 1989. He has appeared at numerous chamber music festivals worldwide\, including the Marlboro Music festival\, through which he has toured with the Musicians from Marlboro series. A faculty member of the Sarasota Music Festival\, he is helping to launch a new bass program for the Killington Music Festival in Killington\, Vermont. Cobb also serves as principal bass for Valery Gergiev’s World Orchestra for Peace\, an invited group of musicians from around the world who donate their time biannually and perform to promote international harmony. Cobb has been designated a UNESCO Artist for Peace from his affiliation with the World Orchestra. Learn more about Timothy Cobb \nBlake Hinson (Bass): Assistant Principal Bass Blake Hinson joined the New York Philharmonic in September 2012. Previously he served as principal bass of the Grand Rapids Symphony for two seasons\, played with the New World Symphony as a fellow\, and performed with The Philadelphia Orchestra. A native of West Des Moines\, Iowa\, Hinson was accepted at age 16 to The Curtis Institute of Music\, where he studied with Philadelphia Orchestra principal bass Harold Robinson and Edgar Meyer. He spent three summers at the Aspen Music Festival and School on fellowship\, where he played in the Aspen Chamber Symphony and Aspen Festival Orchestra and won the 2006 low strings competition. Hinson won third prize in the 2009 International Society of Bassists Double Bass Competition and made his solo debut at Boston’s Symphony Hall. Learn more about Blake Hinson \nAlexander Kiladze (Piano): Alexander Kiladze  is an award-winning pianist who has performed in the United States\, Germany\, Russia\, Switzerland\, Spain\, Italy\, and Belgium at venues including New York’s Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall and Steinway Hall\, Brussels’s Palaix des Beaux-Arts\, Moscow International House of Music\, and the Small Hall of Moscow Conservatory. He has appeared in concertos with The Orchestra Now\, Lumacamerata\, Kaufman Center Orchestra\, and Bard College Orchestra\, among others. At the age of five Kiladze was accepted to the Special Music School in New York — the only pre-conservatory music school for gifted children in the US — where he received many accolades\, including participation in the  Moscow Virtuosi  festival of young performers. He then moved to Switzerland to study with Konstantin Lifschitz at the Hochschule Luzern für Musik. While in Switzerland he studied with Eliso Virsaladze at the Scuola di Musica Fiesole\, and finished his postgraduate studies with Virsaladze at the Moscow Conservatory. In 2022 he followed with conducting and orchestrating a sold out show at Disney Hall for his long time friend Robert Glaper. Orchestrating for the YOLA orchestra for the SuperBowl and later in March he conducted and orchestrated for the 94th Academy Awards in Los Angeles. All while balancing his TV & Film career\, with most recent work on Stella Meghi’s “The Photograph” and Lionsgate’s “Run The World” Series and the upcoming 2022 Netflix release of “The System” Starring Terence Howard and Jeremy Pevin.\nTellingly\, Hodge has been the ‘first’ many times in his career: including being the first Black composer to write strings for Hip Hop at Carnegie Hall (as Arranger for Mos Def in the venue’s first full Hip Hop show in 2008)\,and the first black composer to write symphonic music for Hip Hop with the Houston Symphony (as Creative Director & Arranger for Common with the Houston Symphony in 2019).\nThis habit of breaking new ground and forging new paths hints at how significant a cultural force Hodge is in ways beyond music. In 2017 he was commissioned by the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture to write the installation music that accompanies their permanent exhibit about Oak’s Bluff: “The Power of Place”. The exhibition explores how place is something defined as much by people as by geography\, and how Oak’s Bluff became a place of collective imagining\, struggle\, achievement and freedom for a burgeoning African American community. Hodge went on to compose for “Social Dance” – part of the NMAAHC’s seminal ‘Cultural Expressions’ floor\, which explores African American and African diaspora culture – and for their “Making A Way” exhibit\, which pays tribute to the creativity\, agency and resilience with which individual African Americans crafted opportunity and possibility in the face of racial oppression.\nThroughout his life\, Hodge has devoted himself to projects that elevate and animate the African American legacy: the struggle but also – always – the poetry and the triumph too. It is this ability to honor and advance both culture and people that is the principle thread which weaves together Hodge’s work.\nAs a performer\, Hodge has founded and played in bands and groups as diverse and as influential as R+R=Now\, the Robert Glasper Experiment and The Blue Note All Stars\, as a producer he has collaborated with icons including Quincy Jones\, Don Was and Common and as Musical Director he has worked with luminaries including Yasiin Bey\, Nas\, and notably held the position with Maxwell from 2009 to 2019. As a Blue Note Recording Artist Hodge has released three critically acclaimed solo projects: Live Today (2013)\, The Second (2016)\, and Color Of Noize (2020). His albums are rich\, raw and revelatory – reflecting everything from his roots in the church to an undercurrent of hiphop and eternal reverence for melody and classical composition.\nThe Color Of Noize project is Hodge’s signature concept-series\, bringing together contrasting sounds\, styles and set-ups to create an immersive and inherently transcendent audio-visual experience. It is also particularly close to Hodge’s heart as it opens up not just his music\, but also his mission: to create a new\, free space for music whilst also championing his community of both established and emerging musicians. More than an album\, The Color Of Noize is an ongoing commitment to artistic excellence and inclusion\, in particular the creation of opportunities and broadening of horizons for inner city youth. He first premiered Color of Noize in 2019 as part of his Artist Residency at Monterey Jazz Festival\, where Hodge brought together a collection of musicians\, some as young as 4\, on stage with him to explore his original compositions in a remarkably moving and beautiful concert. As he puts it “it was never just my potential that made things happen; it was my community advocating for me – now I want to advocate for others\, to pass that on”.\nThis is the natural progression for an Artist whose career has always been as rooted in meaning as it is in music: Hodge’s body of work speaks to a sense of social responsibility that he carries as keenly as his creativity. Whether collaborating with giants\, writing for the big screen\, forging new paths for orchestral composition\, or creating outreach projects like providing access to his symphonic scores and original arrangements to HBCUs & inner-city Music Programs\, his work has the telltale trademark of always provoking social commentary\, awareness or insight. DESCRIPTION:Jonathan Paik -composition\, piano\, samplers\nHenry Paul -samplers\, DX7\nalana amore colvin -guitar\nKai Burns -guitar\nShogo Yamagishi -bass\nMark Valdes -drums \nJonathan Paik presents “Catch me weeping in reverent awe”\, a collection of compositions that call on the power of hymns\, sanjo\, footwork\, the blues\, free jazz\, musique concrète\, and internet algorithms in an attempt to answer the question of how to deal with evil and complexity and compromise alongside the people and things you love. \nJonathan Paik is a Brooklyn-based pianist\, keyboardist\, and improvisor/composer. He is the founder and leader of the firespitting quartet FUGITIVE\, one-half of electronic duo BUSBOY\, and a regular member of Alfredo Colon’s quintet\, Victor Solano’s SUNDATE\, and Jahnvi Madan’s quartet. His playing has also been heard with the likes of David Binney\, Joe Morris\, Charles Altura\, and Charles Downs. Join pianist Ana Glig\, contralto Vira Slywotzky and special guest Miriam Eckelhoefer\, cellist\, on a joyous and moving musical journey. Revel in the sumptuous sound worlds of Alma Mahler\, Meri Davitashvili\, Florence Price\, Martha Redbone\, Sylvia Filus\, Lori Laitman\, Niloufar Nourbakhsh\, Vivian Fung\, Mary Ann Howe\, Dina Pruzhansky\, Olga Zaitseva-Herz and Augusta Holmès. Delight in the settings of humorous\, probing\, pensive and passionate texts. Email hello@viraandfriends.org \nWe’d like to thank The Puffin Foundation for support of this project. \nAbout the performers:\nANA GLIG (aka Gligvashvili) is a an award-winning\, Georgian-American pianist\, recognized for her “virtuosic command of works” and “ability to capture hearts” (Musical America Worldwide). \nAs a solo recitalist and chamber musician\, Glig has appeared at venues such as New York City’s Steinway Hall\, Consulates of Poland and Germany\, Ukrainian Institute of America\, Bohemian National Hall\, Faculty House at Columbia University\, Subculture and others in America and Europe. As an orchestral soloist Glig has performed with the Cape Symphony\, Cape Cod Chamber Orchestra and WPI Philharmonic Orchestras as well as in her homeland Georgia and in Israel. Glig has been a featured soloist at Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concert Series in Chicago\, Illinois. \nGlig’s playing is praised to “project the sense of excitement while retaining cleanliness and accuracy” (Fanfare Magazine). In her album ‘Reminiscences’ Glig’s playing was also recognized for it’s “..sensitivity and ability to finely capture some of Georgia’s haunting\, elusive film melodies ..as well as anyone on disc.“ (Fanfare Magazine). Other reviews praised her “lovely expressiveness\, clarity in legato\, balance and perfect logic” (Chatham Music Club\, MA). \nAna Glig is a founder of multi-media concerts MusArt Interconnections\, with focus on synthesis of classical music and visual art. Glig’s professional engagements include masterclasses in the Republic of Georgia\, Cape Cod (Massachusetts) and University of New Hampshire (Durham\, MA). \nGlig received her Master’s degree in piano performance from Mannes School of Music -The New School (NYC)\, an Advanced Certificate in Piano Performance and Pedagogy from New York University (NYU Steinhardt)\, where she also served as a member of Adjunct Piano Faculty. She completed her Bachelor’s degree in piano performance from Tbilisi State Conservatoire (Republic of Georgia) under the mentorship of Revaz Tavadze. Her teachers also include prolific pianist-pedagogues such as Eteri Andjaparidze\, Marine Gelashvili and Victor Rosenbaum among others. Glig’s collaborations include performances with contralto Vira Slywotzky and Cape Symphony’s principal cellist Jacques Lee Wood. \nMost recently Glig performed All Georgian Classical Music along with the Georgian baritone Gocha Abuladze in Stamford\, New York. \nGlig is an artist faculty member at Cape Symphony and Music Director at the First United Methodist Church in Chatham. \nContralto VIRA SLYWOTZKY has performed principal roles with Seattle Opera\, Chautauqua Opera\, Chelsea Opera\, Center for Contemporary Opera\, Sarasota Opera and Boston Midsummer Opera. She has sung concerts\, recitals and cabarets in New York City venues from The Duplex to Weill Hall at Carnegie Hall and on tour all over the United States. Internationally Slywotzky has been heard in Canada\, France\, Hungary\, Sweden and Wales. \nA champion of new music\, she has workshopped and premiered more than 30 works including songs\, full scale opera and narration with orchestra. \nSince February 2022 Slywotzky has been serving as a cultural ambassador and fundraising for Razom for Ukraine and other organizations providing aid to and supporting Ukraine. Her performances have collected over $275\,000. \nParticipant in numerous competitions and winner of awards\, most significantly Slywotzky was the sole representative of the USA at the 2009 BBC Cardiff Singer of the World Competition. \nShe runs the multiform concert series Vira + Friends and is Member Emeritus on the Board of the Berkshire Opera Festival. \n“Vira Slywotzky is an immensely talented\, charismatic performer who transforms herself\, and captivates her audience with her songs and tales.” – The Village View \nCellist MIRIAM ECKELHOEFER has a multifaceted career as a performer\, teacher\, and administrator. An active freelance musician\, Miriam plays with various orchestras and chamber ensembles in New England and has held positions with orchestras throughout Michigan\, Ohio\, Indiana\, Massachusetts\, Connecticut\, and New York. She has performed at festivals throughout the United States\, Canada\, England\, France\, Italy\, and Holland. An avid educator\, Miriam is on faculty at the Tufts University Community Music Program\, Concord Academy and the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestras\, and she maintains a private cello studio in Somerville\, MA. In 2005 she co-founded Elm City ChamberFest\, a summer chamber music festival in New Haven\, CT\, and served as Director of Preparatory and Continuing Studies at the Longy School of Music in Cambridge\, MA\, from 2008 until 2013. From 2019-2025 Miriam was director of the chamber music program at Boston Youth Symphony Orchestras. She was the founding director of BYSO’s ChamberFest and currently serves as its co-director. Miriam holds a DMA from SUNY at Stony Brook\, an MM from Yale University\, and a BS in Mathematics and BA in Music from the University of Notre Dame. Her principal instructors include Colin Carr\, Aldo Parisot\, Karen Buranskas\, Irene Sharp\, and members of the Tokyo and Emerson String Quartets. \nVira Slywotzky founded VIRA + FRIENDS in May 2018 with the intent of bringing people together to enjoy the live performance of music written for voice and piano. Since that time Vira + Friends has become a multiform concert series with the expanded missions of developing audiences for classical music and providing a platform for composers traditionally neglected by the Western canon. Vira + Friends is a nonprofit corporation under the auspices of the Ukrainian American Educational Center of Boston\, a 501(c)(3).
