SUMMARY:Killing the Silence: A Concert for Ukraine: Music by Ukrainian composers at St Mark’s in the Bowery
DESCRIPTION:Concert to benefit Ukraine Children’s Action Project\, featuring Ukrainian composers and music that reflects the country’s very vibrant and vital culure. \nVasyl Barvinsky was one of the first Ukrainian composers to achieve international acclaim. As a member of the Ukrainian intelligentsia he was arrested by the Soviet authorities in 1948 and sentenced to 10 years in the Gulag. Many of his works were destroyed. Our program features the third movement of his dramatic “ Love “ cycle for solo piano\, entitled “Fight\, Pain the Victory of Love”. \nValentyn Sylvestrov writes in a post-modern musical style\, using traditional tonal and modal techniques to create a delicate fantasy-world with an intense emotional impact. He said of his art\, “I do not write new music. My music is a response to and an echo of what already exists.” \nLeo Ornstein was born in Kremenchuk\, (now Ukraine) in 1895\, and came to the Lower East side as an 11 year old piano prodigy. His family were refugees from the pogroms incited by the antisemitic nationalistic organization\, “Union of the Russian People.” He grew up to be recognized as a world-class pianist and an adventurous and audacious composer\, pioneer of the tone-cluster. \nSergei Bortkiewicz was born in Kharkov in 1877\, but lost the family estate his mother and sister to the Bolsheviks and the Red Army invasion. He spent much of his life as a refugee\, later to the Nazis\, undergoing extreme hardships and financial difficulties. Nevertheless he produced a remarkable body of work\, writing in the grand romantic tradition of beautiful melodies and rich harmonies. \nThe Bowers-Fader Duo explore Ukraine’s rich folk music tradition with a set of songs for mezzo and guitar. \nComposer and violinist Andrii Didorenko uses folk material in his “Postcards from Ukraine\,” performed with his wife the pianist Yuliya Basis. \nWe are proud to present the the members of Ukrainian Chorus Dumka\, fresh from performances in Carnegie Hall and on Saturday Night Live. \nThe Ukrainian Chorus Dumka of New York was established in 1949 as a male chorus by Ukrainians who escaped from the oppression and terror of the Soviet regime. The name comes from the Ukrainian word dumka\, which translates to thought\, and duma\, a form of epic folk song that originated in Ukraine in the 16th century. The founders of this vocal ensemble sought to preserve and cultivate the rich secular and sacred musical heritage of Ukraine. In 1959\, Dumka became a mixed chorus allowing them to expand their repertoire. Their musical library includes over 400 works from Ukrainian composers\, as well as many western composers. Since its inception\, the chorus has performed concerts at Alice Tully Hall\, Avery Fisher Hall\, Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. Dumka sings annual Christmas concerts at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in NYC. The chorus has also performed across Ukraine and other European countries as well as in several cities in The United States. \nDumka appeared as a musical guest on Saturday Night Live\, in February 2022 singing Prayer for Ukraine. The chorus has been invited to dozens of venues to represent the culture of Ukraine through the performance of beautiful secular and sacred music\, while raising awareness and relief funds to support the people of Ukraine. In August 2022\, Dumka performed at the opening ceremonies of the U.S. Open Tennis Tournament at Arthur Ashe Stadium singing One Moment In Time. \nThe members of The Ukrainian Chorus Dumka of NY are honored to continue serving the community\, through broadening and cultivating the music from its native land. Since 1991\, Dumka has performed under the direction of Vasyl Hrechynsky. \n“As far as I am concerned\, romanticism is not the bloodless intellectual commitment to a program\, but the expression of my most profound mind and soul.” — Serii Bortkiewi \nComposers \n\nVasyl Barvinsky\nLeo Ornstein\nAndrii Didorenko\nSerii Bortkiewicz\n\nPerformers \n\nBowers-Fader Duo\nTony Lu\, piano\nAndrii Didorenko\nYuliya Basis\nEric Eaton\, cello\nVanessa Lee piano\nJoan Forsyth\, piano\nUkrainian Chorus “Dumka”

SUMMARY:Jazz Vespers: Mark Wade\, Tim Harrison\, and Scott Neumann at Saint Peter's Church
DESCRIPTION:NYC’s unique jazz prayer service\, Sundays at 5 since 1965. All are welcome. Free to attend! \nABOUT MARK WADE (bass) \n“Mark Wade has advanced the art of jazz composition.” Downbeat Magazine \n“One of the preeminent musicians of his generation.” UK Vibe \nModern jazz composer and bassist Mark Wade is open to appreciating and cocreating great music in all its forms. Like Keith Jarrett\, Wynton Marsalis and Esperanza Spaulding\, he’s not limited by genre. His fourth album shows the breadth of his musicality and inventive compositional style. Called “a living work of modern art” by Downbeat Magazine\, the original tracks found on his 2022 album True Stories were inspired by a wide range of influences\, drawing on themes from composers such as Miles Davis\, Charles Mingus and Igor Stravinsky. The result is a unique expression of jazz linking past to present. \nWade’s critical successes have led to him being named one of the top bassists of the year for five of the last six years in the Downbeat Magazine Reader’s Poll. He gained international recognition for his trio with the 2015 recording Event Horizon on Edition 46 Records and the 2018 follow up Moving Day on AMP Music & Records. In 2020 he launched a unique solo project – a visual album. Debuted online from the Centre for Jazz and Popular Music in Durban\, South Africa\, Songs from Isolation was released worldwide on AMP Music & Records. It features acoustic and electric bass and the plethora of sounds those instruments can create. The tunes are accompanied by music videos created by the bassist. That sonic and technological exploration was a fascinating prelude to his next project. True Stories is a modern jazz compendium inspired by a lifetime of listening – a leap forward fueled by looking back. \nABOUT TIM HARRISON (piano) \nTim Harrison\, a native of Nottingham\, England\, studied classical flute at the Royal College of Music in London\, where he worked as a professional musician for eight years. At the age of 26 he changed instruments\, started learning jazz piano\, and a year later won a scholarship to the University of North Texas. After receiving his master’s degree Harrison co-led the Unified Jazz Ensemble\, a quintet that for four years lived\, performed\, and taught in small towns in Iowa and Arkansas for the National Endowment for the Arts. \nHarrison moved to New York in 1996\, where he performs\, composes and teaches. In 2004 his orchestral composition Prelude and Dirge was commissioned and premiered by the New York Philharmonic Orchestra on the 80th anniversary of its Young People’s Concerts at Lincoln Center. His debut CD\, aria\, (featuring his settings of Emily Dickinson poems) was selected as one of the top five CDs of 2005 by Jazzviews magazine. \nABOUT SCOTT NEUMANN (drums) \nSince arriving in New York City in 1988\, drummer\, composer\, bandleader and educator Scott Neumann has been involved in a diverse and creative mixture of musical experiences. Scott leads and composes for his two acclaimed bands\, Neu3 Trio(Origin Records) and Osage County(Chicken Coup Records)\, which perform music from very different corners of the jazz spectrum. As a performer\, Scott has toured Europe\, South America and Asia with such luminaries as David Liebman\, Madeline Peyroux and the Woody Herman Orchestra. Since moving to New York City he has performed on over 60 CDs as a sideman. Scott’s versatility as a player found him touring for nearly a decade on the Jam Band/Electric Bluegrass scene with the Tony Trischka Band and the Jazz Mandolin Project. Scott has also performed in the orchestras of over twenty Broadway productions ranging from the classic shows Cabaret and 42nd St. to the more modern productions of Avenue Q and Xanadu. As an educator\, Scott has participated in university and school workshops throughout the United States\, South America and Europe. Scott has been on the faculty of Lehigh University as the director of drum studies since 2005. Scott is an exclusive artist/educator for GMS drums\, Sabian cymbals and Aquarian drumheads.

SUMMARY:Ayumi Ishito\, Rema Hasumi & Yuko Togami with Tamio Shiraishi at CRS (Center for Remembering & Sharing)
DESCRIPTION:CRS (Center for Remembering & Sharing) presents the next installment of its Paradise Laboratory concert series\, featuring ambient\, atmospheric\, improvised music by trio Ayumi Ishito (tenor saxophone and electronics)\, Rema Hasumi (synthesizer) & Yuko Togami (drums)\, with special guest the legendary Tamio Shirashi (alto sax\, electronics) who is known for his frenetic bursts of high-pitched sounds at the very extreme of what the alto can produce. \nPARADISE LABORATORY is a playground for sonic and visual experimentation. Conceived of during the pandemic by the renowned Korean traditional multi-instrumentalist\, curator\, and scholar gamin\, Paradise Laboratory provides musical artists with opportunities to rehearse\, record\, film\, and perform with other musical\, visual\, and/or dance artists in an experimental\, process-oriented\, and artist-centered fashion. \nABOUT THE ARTISTS \nTamio Shiraishi is\, along with Keiji Haino\, a founding member of the Japanese avant garde group Fushitsusha in the 1970s. His involvement with Fushitsusha was however transient and the experience and connections formed through it led him to choose the saxophone as his main instrument. In 1990 Shiraishi moved to New York where he now plays solo material at NYC subway stops and collaborative projects at other venues. At 74 years of age Tamio Shiraishi has experienced a lot and\, regardless of the lack of formal education in music\, has honed his unique approach to the alto saxophone to a high level of mastery. His style may be characterized as a microtonal exploration of the altissimo-range\, somewhat reminiscent of traditional Japanese Enka music. While exploring the limits of common aesthetic conceptions\, Shiraishi’s performances in New York subway stops have attracted a small following and aroused conversations about the meaning of this form of expression. \nhttp://www.shiraishitamio.info \nAyumi Ishito was born and raised in Ishikawa\, Japan. At the age of 19\, she began playing tenor saxophone in a college big band at Ritsumeikan University in Kyoto. In 2007\, Ayumi received a scholarship to attend Berkee College of Music in Boston\, Massachusetts. She spent three years there studying performance and composition. After graduating from Berklee\, Ayumi moved to New York in 2010. Ayumi has been playing with many different groups. One of her recent projects\, Open Question\, received a 4-star review in DownBeat magazine in 2022. Another of her projects\, The Spacemen\, was selected for the Best Jazz of 2021 on Bandcamp. As a composer\, Ayumi has been leading her quintet since 2011 and performing her compositions. The band released two albums\, “View From A Little Cave” in 2016 and “Midnite Cinema” in 2019. \nhttps://www.ayumiishito.com \nRema Hasumi is an experimental pianist\, vocalist\, producer and writer who is based out of Brooklyn\, NY. Hasumi was born in 1983 in Fukuoka\, Japan\, and moved to the United States in 2002 to pursue her passion for music\, which was nurtured through more than ten years of classical piano study and the listening experiences of her audiophile parent’s record collection. Hasumi has performed at venues across NY\, the United States and Asia. In 2009 she performed at the Kennedy Center as one of the four finalists of Mary Lou Williams Women In Jazz Pianist Competition. In 2014\, upon invitation by acclaimed vocalist Jen Shyu\, Hasumi presented her solo work “The Patterns of Duplicity” at a series of “Solo Rites” concerts by Ms. Shyu. The piece featured the poetry “Spring and Asura” (1925) by Kenji Miyazawa interpreted in multiple languages\, exploring the possibilities of musical ideas unique and inherent to each language. Hasumi has also worked extensively as both pianist and vocalist in many other projects\, including a series of collaborations with the saxophonist Darius Jones in which they performed the music of Alice Coltrane. She has also worked as the vocalist in the guitarist Todd Neufeld’s new two-drummer group. Hasumi’s new trio premiered in June 2015 in two nights of concerts in NYC. It featured compositions she wrote for piano and voice\, performed alongside the great Randy Peterson and Masa Kamaguchi. Her first record “UTAZATA” was released in May 2015 from Ruweh Records\, which she runs as a co-founder. It features the highly sympathetic cast of Todd Neufeld (guitar)\, Thomas Morgan (bass)\, Billy Mintz (drums)\, and fiery guest musicians Ben Gerstein (trombone) and Sergio Krakowski (pandeiro). The group interprets the themes of Japanese Gagaku and ritual music. This record was made as a result of mindful searching on femininity\, mythology and rituals in Japanese performing arts. In 2016\, Hasumi released a trio recording “Billows of Blue” featuring Randy Peterson and Masa Kamaguchi. Her most recent album and a solo recording\, called “Abiding Dawn”\, reveals Hasumi’s sound world all alone\, layering and unlayering voice\, piano and analog synthesizers in a seamless journey of eight gorgeous tracks. The word and the wordless\, the pitched and the unpitched all meet in Hasumi’s voice\, while her piano honors the influences of Alice Coltrane and Masabumi Kikuchi\, met squarely on her own honest terms. The use of synthesizer\, a vintage Korg Delta DL-50\, serves to encompass and meld the sonic meal. \nhttps://remahasumi.bandcamp.com \nYuko Togami is a drummer and composer currently based in New York City\, originally from Saitama\, Japan. She was exposed to music from a very early age as she was always watching her mother teach piano and Eurhythmics. She started taking Eurhythmics classes and playing piano when she was about 5. Later on\, she also started playing marimba and studied classical music until she graduated from high school. While she was in high school\, she got attracted to drums and began taking drum lessons. A couple years later\, she started performing as a drummer based in Tokyo. In 2013\, she moved to New York City to pursue further musical studies at the City College of New York. She received a scholarship from The Kaye Scholars Program\, and studied privately with Adam Cruz\, Nasheet Waits\, and Ben Street. She graduated with her BFA degree in jazz performance and The Pro Musica Award from City College\, and has performed with many different musicians and projects including Steve Wilson\, Mike Holober\, Scott Reeves\, Ben Paterson\, Mark Wade\, Jakob Dreyer\, Takaaki Otomo\, Nori Naraoka\, Berta Moreno\, Maksim Perepelica\, Latvian Concert Choir\, Musicsnake\, Kijima Sound System. Her debut album “Dawn” was released in April 2018 and won a Silver Medal at the 2018 Global Music Awards for Outstanding Achievement. \nhttps://www.yukotogami.com/ \nABOUT THE PRESENTER \nCRS (CENTER FOR REMEMBERING & SHARING) is a spiritual healing and art center founded in 2004 by the writer/lecturer/spiritual counselor Yasuko Kasaki and artist Christopher Pelham. Our mission is guided by A Course in Miracles (ACIM). ACIM says that recognizing that you and your brother are actually one is the only way to experience peace. The mission of CRS is to promote the awareness that limitless creativity lives within each of us. We train minds to recognize the light in themselves and others and provide them opportunities to share their inner vision through the healing and creative arts. Since its founding CRS has provided numerous residencies and performance and exhibition opportunities to artists from all over the world. Currently\, CRS is an ongoing sponsor of M³ (Mutual Mentorship for Musicians)\, a platform created to empower\, elevate\, normalize and give visibility to women\, non-binary musicians and those of other historically underrepresented gender identities in intersection with race\, sexuality\, or ability across generations in the US and worldwide\, through a radical model of mentorship and musical collaborative commissions. \nhttps://crsny.org
