SUMMARY:Soulive at Blue Note
DESCRIPTION:Performers\nEric Krasno\,\nAlan Evans\,\nNeil Evans \nSoulive has never made any bones about what they do best; it’s right there in their name. Since forming in 1999\, the trio of guitarist Eric Krasno\, drummer Alan Evans and keyboardist Neal Evans has carried the torch for the soul-jazz organ trio — that venerable\, funky institution pioneered by the likes of Jimmy Smith\, Brother Jack McDuff and Groove Holmes in the late ’60s. Rest assured\, when the Evans brothers first brought Kraz by their Woodstock studio\, there was plenty of old vinyl spread out on the floor. \nIn their 20 years together\, Soulive has followed the muse in the direction of hip-hop\, R&B\, blues and rock\, collaborating with the likes of Chaka Khan\, Dave Matthews\, Talib Kweli\, John Scofield\, Derek Trucks\, Maceo Parker\, Susan Tedeschi\, Robert Randolph\, Joshua Redman\, Kenny Garrett\, Fred Wesley\, The Roots\, Ivan Neville and so many others\, even going so far as to record a full album of covers by The Beatles (Rubber Soulive). But\, no matter how they push the limits of the organ trio\, they always come back to their bread and butter: blistering solos and grooves that don’t quit.

SUMMARY:Richard Carrick’s The Atlas (NY Premiere) at Tenri Cultural Institute of New York
DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, June 24\, 2023\, at Tenri Cultural Institute\, EO presents the New York Premiere of composer and EO Director composer Richard Carrick’s The Atlas\, an hour-long work for piano and string quartet that manifests in music various tales of exploring\, belonging\, revisiting\, longing and blissful enjoyment. In Carrick’s words: “The Atlas is inspired by stories about individuals\, communities\, ancestry\, and unknown peoples and places. It sonically traverses the ocean\, desert\, forest\, city\, and home.” The music traces influences that include Tom Waits\, Algerian Chaabi music\, Iancu Dumitrescu\, and Henry Cowell. Presented in nine movements\, The Atlas is an embodiment of the narrative between composer and piano\, experimenting throughout with extended techniques inside the instrument. Carrick’s writing for string quartet in the work is customized for and inspired by the unique skills of the composers’ longtime collaborators in Either/Or. \nPROGRAM \nThe Atlas (NY Premiere) \nRichard Carrick\, composer \n\nCompass\nSeagliss\nPenumbra (la terre inconnue)\nExpanse\nInterlude\nla terre\nSolo\nCartographers\nJourney through the Spheres\n\nPERSONNEL \nRichard Carrick – piano\, Jennifer Choi – violin\, Pala Garcia – violin\, John Popham – cello \, Kal Sugatski – viola \nNOTE: Proof of vaccine will be required to enter (photo of vaccine card is acceptable)\, and masks must be worn indoors.
