Richard Goode presents a concert sure to demonstrate why he is “one of the finest pianists in the world” (The Washington Post). The program begins with Haydn’s double-themed Variations in F Minor, the first theme melancholy and standoffish, the second sunnier, with right-hand filigree. Then, five rarely-heard pieces of Mozart precede one of Beethoven’s best-loved sonatas, “Les Adieux”, dedicated to Archduke Rudolf and describing the Archduke’s departure, absence, and return to Vienna. On the second half, Janáček’s introspective In the Mists introduces a selection of works by Frederic Chopin, including the tempestuous Fantasy in F Minor. A concert that no lover of piano music should miss!
