SUMMARY:Resonances of a New (York) Era: Feldman\, Xenakis\, Berio\, and Boulez at Milton Resnick and Pat Passlof Foundation
DESCRIPTION:Please join for a concert on Friday\, December 13th\, at 7 pm\, featuring works by Morton Feldman\, Iannis Xenakis\, Luciano Berio\, and Pierre Boulez\, performed by artists Aaron Wolff\, Ryan Jung\, and Tina Deng. \nThe 1950s marked New York’s emergence as a global metropolis for the arts\, exemplified by the New York School—a collective of poets\, painters\, sculptors\, dancers\, and musicians—and its center movement of Abstract Expressionism. This concert includes three works by Morton Feldman—Durations No. 2 (1960)\, Vertical Thoughts 4 (1963)\, and Piano Piece (to Philip Guston) (1963)—resonating with the current exhibition of Milton Resnick’s three paintings from 1959 to1961. \nDuring the 1960s and 1970s\, as New York solidified its identity as an artistic epicenter\, international artists further enriched the city’s cultural landscape. Among these were Italian composer Luciano Berio\, who taught at the Juilliard School from 1965 to 1971\, and French composer Pierre Boulez\, who served as the music director of the New York Philharmonic from 1971 to 1977. In anticipation of the centennial celebrations of Berio and Boulez in 2025\, this concert\, the first in a series\, explores two of Berio’s Sequenzas (Sequenza IV for piano and Sequenza XIV for cello) and Boulez’s Incises (1994/2001). \nThe series will continue on January 23rd\, 2025\, featuring works by Arnold Schoenberg and Boulez\, as well as Berio’s Sequenzas for flute and for violin. \nProgram \nMorton Feldman: Durations No.2 for cello and piano (1960)\nMorton Feldman: Vertical Thoughts 4 (1963)\nMorton Feldman: Piano Piece (to Philip Guston) (1963)\nIannis Xenakis: Six Chansons for piano (1950-51)\nLuciano Berio: Sequenza IV for piano (1965)\nPierre Boulez: Incises (1994\, revised in 2001)\nLuciano Berio: Sequenza XIV for cello (2002) \nMusicians \nAaron Wolff – cello\nRyan Jung – piano\nTina Deng – piano \n
