Piano Dialogues: Phyllis Chen, at Merkin Concert Hall

Saturday April 30, 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

$25

Post-concert conversation with New York Times bestselling children’s book author Grace Lin
Composer-performer Phyllis Chen premieres a new work featuring newly commissioned scroll painting by the celebrated children’s author Grace Lin and toy instruments. The program includes other original works by Chen using her collection of home-made, handmade and manipulated miniature instruments including Tone Grove for prepared music boxes and electronics and Sumitones for solo piano as well as Still Cycles by Danny Clay. The concert promises to be an enlightening musical experience for listeners young and old.

Described by The New York Times as “spellbinding” and “delightfully quirky matched with interpretive sensitivity,” Chen is a composer and sound artist whose music draws from her tactile exploration of object and sound. The toy piano became her grounds to develop her personal voice, inevitably reflecting her third-culture kid experience pushing towards a non-genre-defining music. She has received commissions from ICE ensemble, A Far Cry Orchestra, Baryshnikov Arts Center, Claire Chase’s Density Project, Opera Cabal, Singapore International Festival for the Arts, Jerome-Roulette Intermedium, Look& Listen Festival, NYSCA, New Music USA, Fromm Foundation (Harvard) and Pew Heritage Trust (via Christ Church) and was named one of the 2019 Cage-Cunningham Fellow by ballet dancer Mikhail Baryshnikov.

$10 students tickets are available. Call the box office at 212 501 3330.
