Pegasus Piano Series Concert at Mana Contemporary (Jersey City) (Site)

Thursday December 14, 2017, 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm

$25 – $150

Celebrate the holidays at Mana theater under the soft, glowing light of a myriad of candles. The second concert of the Pegasus Piano Series features piano series co-founder and co-director Nadejda Vlaeva in a recital surrounded by candlelight. She begins with Beethoven’s beloved “Moonlight” Sonata. A critic once wrote that the opening movement reminded him of moonlight flickering across Lake Lucerne. After a graceful, short second movement, a dramatic volcano of arpeggios engulfs us in the finale. We then go from the familiar to a true discovery. The Fantasiestucke by Sergei Bortkiewicz with its hauntingly beautiful melodies, deeply moving harmonies, and ravishing piano textures was believe to have been destroyed in WWII before it could be published. It was only discovered in 2013 after languishing in an archive for over 70 years. Ms. Vlaeva performed this work at Carnegie Hall. Continuing in the Romantic spirit, Vlaeva next plays Chopin’s Andante Spianato and Grand Polonaise. The piece is a delightful mix of poetic melodic lines and dazzling fingerwork. Schubert’s song, Serenade, features one of the most loving melodies in all the music literature. It is heard here in Franz Liszt’s arrangement for solo piano. Grunfeld’s “Soiree de Vienne,” based on Die Fledermaus, is a throwback to the 19th century where potpourri’s based on famous Strauss waltzes were enthusiastically received by concert goers.
