Katia and Marielle Labèque, Pianos
The New York Philharmonic performs a double dose of Debussy, beginning with the sensuous Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune, and culminating in the daring harmonies and shimmering colors of La mer. It was Wagner’s ambiguous harmonies that influenced Debussy, such as those found in his Prelude and Liebestod from Tristan und Isolde that portend a tragic love story. Katia and Marielle Labèque—the “best piano duo in front of an audience today” (The New York Times)—also join the orchestra for the US premiere of Nico Muhly’s In Certain Circles.
