Music From Copland House at Elebash Recital Hall, CUNY (Site)

Monday February 3, 2020, 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm

Free

The Office of Academic Initiatives and Strategic Innovation at The Graduate Center is delighted to present the internationally acclaimed Music from Copland House

With a unique focus on a century of American musical creativity and imagination, explored within broad historical and societal contexts, these programs offer ear-opening discoveries and surprising cultural journeys. Bringing “all the richness of its offerings” (The New York Times), Music from Copland House’s concerts feature World and New York Premieres, revivals of American classics, brand new pieces written especially for Copland House’s coveted CULTIVATE emerging composers institute, and programs inspired by identity and assimilation, the intersection of music and visual arts, and real, imagined, or spiritual journeys through sound and time. The ensemble will also invite doctoral students from the Music Department at The Graduate Center to perform with the ensemble at several of these concerts. The series takes place in the handsome, acoustically-superb Elebash Recital Hall at The Graduate Center in the heart of Manhattan.

Magical, mystical journeys – real, imagined, and spiritual – coursing through sound and time, hereditary history and the Scottish highlands, and an ancient Egyptian guide to the after-life (as interpreted through the lens of a Bill Viola video installation).

New York Premieres of works by Flannery Cunningham, Sebastian Currier, and Kevin Puts.

Music from Copland House Artists: Curtis Macomber and Suliman Tekalli, violins; Danielle Farina, viola; Alexis Pia Gerlach, cello; Michael Boriskin, piano. The Graduate Center Artists: Igor Begelman, clarinet.
