Kansas City Seven: The Small Group Music of Count Basie
Hosted by Justin Poindexter and Chris Pattishall
William “Count” Basie was a master of understatement on the piano and led one of the most durable and swinging bands in the history of jazz. His orchestra was legendary for its tight rhythm section, riff-oriented arrangements, bluesy style, gifted soloists, and propulsive 4/4 swing feel. His spare, syncopated piano playing and exquisite timing influenced generations of musicians. In this program, Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Justin Poindexter and pianist Chris Pattishall will lead a septet of extraordinary musicians, exploring some of Basie’s rarely heard small group pieces.
Presented in collaboration with Jazz at Lincoln Center
