Jake Holtzman Bach and Schumann Recital at St. John’s in the Village (Site)

JUNE SUMMER SERIES
ARTIST:  Jake Holtzman, piano
PROGRAM: Robert Schumann’s Humoreske, while written in Bb major, is mostly set to its relative minor key, G minor, which appropriately opens this program with Bach’s G minor English Suite.

ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Pianist Jake Holtzman comes from San Rafael, California, and currently lives in New York City. He has performed in many venues throughout the United States with recent engagements bringing him to Old St. Mary’s Cathedral for San Francisco’s Noontime Concerts, St. Paul’s Chapel at Columbia University, the San Francisco Steinway Piano Gallery, the Kalamazoo Epic Center, and the Avram Theater in Southampton, NY. Jake has garnered several awards recognizing his work, including the NYU Walter Reinhold Scholarship, the Gilmore Master Class Fellowship, and the Oberlin Piano Faculty Prize in Accompanying.

Jake also frequently performs as a collaborative pianist, and is a staff accompanist for the Lucy Moses School and for NYU Steinhardt’s Double Reed Department. In Summer 2018, Jake was among a small group of pianists selected to intern at the Castleman Quartet Program, where he collaborated and performed with many of the festival students in addition to faculty members Charles Castleman, Thomas Landschoot, and Csaba Erdélyi.

A passionate and experienced teacher, Jake teaches for The Browning School, Rubato Music School, Music to Your Home, and has taught as an adjunct piano instructor at NYU. Jake completed his master’s degree in piano performance at NYU Steinhardt, where he studied with Eteri Andjaparidze. He did his undergraduate studies at Oberlin College & Conservatory, completing a B.M. in Piano Performance and a B.A. in Environmental Studies. Past piano teachers have included Peter Takács, John McCarthy, Peter Horvath, and Adam Domash. Jakehas also participated in master classes given by distinguished pianists such as András Schiff, Natalya Antonova, and John O’Conor.
In addition to his experience as a classical pianist, Jake also plays jazz, having performed both as a solo jazz pianist and as a member of many jazz combos. While not playing the piano, Jake enjoys cooking, and also devotes time to activism for various human rights causes.
