He completed his studies in the United Kingdom and Hungary\, reading musicology at Cambridge University. Recently named music director of the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra\, he held the positions of general music director of Freiburg Opera (1999–2003) and musical and artistic director of the National Orchestra of Bordeaux Aquitaine (2007–13).
