Saturday June 8, 2019, 2:30 pm - 4:30 pm

Welcome to The Silent Clowns Film Series, NYC’s longest-running regularly-scheduled showcase for classic silent film comedy (since 1997)! We present monthly, year-round showings of the silent movies of Chaplin, Keaton, Laurel & Hardy, Lloyd, and many others, all with live musical accompaniment by renowned silent film accompanist Ben Model. Every program features a spoken introduction and Q&A by film historians Ben Model and Steve Massa, and our shows are curated by film historian Bruce Lawton. Come early and read our excellent film notes and enjoy silent-era coming attraction slides. Our programs, presented on a regular basis on weekend afternoons, are geared to classic film fans as well as to families.

Laurel & Hardy came together as a team in 1927, after years of solo work, and by 1929 had become screen icons recognized around the world. Already familiar with their contrasting shapes and shared derbies, as well as Laurels grin and cry and Hardys slow-burn and delicate gestures, audiences loved them and were ready to follow their transition to sound. Todays selection of 1929 shorts WRONG AGAIN, BIG BUSINESS, DOUBLE WHOOPEE, and BACON GRABBERS is the climax of their silent screen career. Special guests: Jonathan M. Smith and Bob Greenberg as Stan & Ollie. Piano accompaniment by Ben Model.

The Library for the Performing Arts is proud to offer free admission to this program on a first come, first served basis. Admission lines form one hour prior to each program. At that time one ticket is provided per person. Tickets are not available for advance reservation and saving seats is not permitted. General admission seating. Call 212.642.0142 for more detailed information. All programs are subject to last minute change or cancellation.
