ABOUT OUR UPCOMING YOUTH PROGRAMS
8.6.2018- 8.17.2018 Music/Science Summer Program  Monday-Friday 10AM-3PM: 2-week music-science summer program focus on the “the principle of discovery”, and the unity between Classical music and science, in an intensive two-week course of study and experiment. This summer program will take place at St. John’s Church in the Village. Discover the music of science through astronavigation via geometric and astronomic constructions, including that of an astrolabe, and discover the science of music through two intensive weeks of vocal training in bel canto method. Any students ages 12-18 may apply.  12.18.2018: Antonin Dvorak — “America Is An Idea, Not Just A Place” — Carnegie Hall Concert Tuesday, December 18, 2018, 7:30PM, the Foundation will present a concert event at Carnegie Hall, Stern Auditorium/Perlman Stage, entitled “Antonin Dvorak: America is An Idea, Not Just A Place”, in celebration of the 125th “Dvorak at Carnegie Hall” anniversary, which included the premier of Dvorak’s 9th Symphony “From the New World”. The event celebrates the groundbreaking collaboration from 1892-95, between Czech composer Anton Dvorak, African-American classical composer, arranger, and singer Harry Burleigh, and Jeanette Thurber—the founder of the National Conservatory of Music who brought together women and men of all ethnic backgrounds to create “a great and noble school of music”.  Between 1892-95, barriers of ethnicity, gender and wealth were overthrown exactly at the time that they were being otherwise reerected in America. In doing so, the National Conservatory of Music brought about a revolution in musical composition and culture that can be the template for promoting understanding among all people living in our city today. We intend that 1,000-1,500 of the audience members be students, parents and teachers from NYC schools. 9.5.2018 — 6.20.2019: “American Composers Project” and Classical Artist Visits to Schools. Invitation to Students to Join Choral Work and Performances. “The American Initiative” — As a part of our celebration of the 125th “Dvorak at Carnegie Hall” anniversary, and the continuation of the Sylvia Olden Lee initiative, we invite interested schools to join us in an “American Composers’ Project” of rediscovering the tradition of African-American composition and performance and other great Classical works. Composer Dr. Roland Carter will be joined by colleagues and performers that have advanced the work of the Burleigh/Dvorak creative collaboration for more than a century. The season will begin with “Classical Artists Visits to School”—where concert artists will visit schools to demonstrate classical vocal and instrumental performances, and answer Q&A with students over 1-2 periods of class. Schools with students interested in choral singing can join us in the “Composer’s Project”, which will include a series of workshops and conclude with open rehearsals with noted American composers, teachers and singers.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS:
Yaegy Park, violin, won her first violin competition at the age of 3. In 2015, she was named a Young Arts Winner and a semifinalist of the Presidential Scholars.  Her notable achievements include prizes in the Louis Spohr International Young Violin Competition, the Stulberg String International Competition, among many more.  She has performed at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center.   Brenden Zak, violin, is currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in performance at The Juilliard School. He was a finalist in the 2016 Stulberg International String Competition and has soloed with The Ocean City Pops, Ambler Symphony, The Philharmonic of Southern New Jersey, among others.   Frank Mathis, baritone was a soloist in the Roland Hayes Life of Christ song cycle performed at Carnegie Hall in 2016.   He studied with Antonella Banaudi, among others. He has directed choruses and voice training in US and Germany.   He has been a leading part of a program to expose public school children in NYC, Bronx, Harlem and Brooklyn to classical music and choral singing, and will direct the Foundation’s 2018 summer music program.  Jonathan de Peri, piano. Jonathan de Peri studied piano at the Manhattan School of Music before transferring to Columbia University. In 2013, he formed the Gotham Arts Salon, which creates artistic and musical gatherings that blur the line between private and public.
